Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist #87265
Hi, my name is Ben Murphy.
I am a licensed psychotherapist and life coach. My story of developing a love for psychology and personal development has a painful beginning. Before the age of 27, I had very little knowledge of therapy, emotional health, or self-inquiry—and no interest in becoming a helping professional. I grew up heavily involved in athletics, and unknowingly, my entire identity was tied to my athletic performance. In college, I suffered a career-ending injury that sent me into what I now recognize as a full identity crisis.
I coped with the pain—mental, emotional, and physical—through alcohol and drugs, not knowing how to process what I was going through. That self-destructive, pain-avoidant behavior continued until I was 26, when I quit drinking, joined therapeutic support groups, and began working with a personal therapist. Through that process, I integrated the traumas I had experienced and developed the life skills needed to heal and rebuild.
Becoming a Therapist
& My Approach
At age 28, I made the decision to become a therapist, hoping to help others work through their suffering and find health and happiness. My work today is deeply influenced by my personal healing journey and a wide range of therapeutic approaches, including stoic philosophy, solution-focused therapy, gestalt therapy, emotionally focused therapy, spirituality, dance, and bodywork. I strongly believe that physical health is foundational to emotional and mental health, and I talk with all my clients about sleep, nutrition, hydration, and movement.
I’m not the kind of therapist who just sits quietly, nodding and asking, “How does that make you feel?” I’ve had therapists like that, and I never trusted them. I give honest feedback, share what I’m hearing, and work with clients to co-create a plan to address the challenges they’re facing. Because of this style, I often feel more like a life coach than a traditional psychotherapist.
A Message of Hope
If you’re suffering, please keep hope alive in your body. No matter how dark life may feel, healing is possible—and no one has to go through it alone. I truly believe that we can come out the other side of pain wiser, more grounded, and even grateful. Life can be very challenging at times but with some help we can turn those trials into building blocks of our character, that’s my belief anyway. Much love, I am here if you would like to talk
